“And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.” (Exodus 1:21 KJV)
A year before my husband finished medical school in San Antonio, I asked the Lord in my prayer time to begin to prepare a house for us. I had just finished a study of Genesis where I had heard something about Exodus becoming the end of the beginning. I decided to read Exodus in my quiet time.
One day while I was reading, I saw how God had prepared homes for the midwives because they feared God and did not kill the Hebrew baby boys even though commanded to do so by Pharaoh. I again asked the Lord to begin to prepare a house for us. Because I wasn’t in any organized Bible study, I decided to read all cross-references to each passage. As I read about the midwives, I noticed 2 Samuel 7:11 (KJV), which read, “Also the Lord telleth thee that He will make thee an house.” I immediately felt as though God was speaking directly to me.
In 1982, Val completed medical school and we moved to Amarillo for him to complete his medical residency. Our real estate agent had picked out a few houses in our price range to show us. We drove around the city, but did not find the house we felt would be ours. While at lunch, we flipped through the listings and discovered a house our agent had not selected. The price was $12,000. We only had $10,000 my father-in-law had loaned us until we could sell our house in San Antonio
But we went to see the little house on Cherry Street. We were told two single ladies owned it, and they had done some remodeling the past year.
I wondered, Is this God’s way of preparing it for us?
As I walked into the kitchen, I found a note on the kitchen counter stating the price had been lowered from $12,000 to $9,900. I immediately knew we were home. I could honestly write to all our friends, “Once again, God has been faithful to His Word.”
Father, remind us what you have promised. Let us watch for ways you desire to bring Your Word to pass in our daily lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
